Start of the genre

When the first fighting games came out in the 80's, it was all about single sport fighting games ,so there was only wrestling and boxing and karate games which was aligned with the rising of fame of these three fighting sports in the real life which also had impact on the movies in this time ,but the moves were limited and there was no combo system it was all about manifestation not the gaming experience ,so there was simple story lines and a very basic sound tracks.

Development of the genre

When the the 90's kicked in there was a very important leveling up in the fighting mechanics ,combos had been introduced in games like street fighter, mortal kombat, killer instinct and many other games ,there have been a lot of development in the gaming mechanics and storytelling and for the first time the multi martial arts tournament system had been introduced , this had been also due to the rising of the popularity of these type of tournaments in the movies with movies like bloodsport coming out and the introducing of many different martial arts had been used with a very smart approach ,but there was always the problem of the animation of the fighting techniques which was captured or designed in a very primitive tools which made the games looked very funny but unsatisfying for the hardcore gamers how were happy with the games but not with the graphics.

The modern day applications of the genre

In the period between the 90's until now there have been some huge leaps in the graphic aspects ,started with turning from the 2d game system into the 3d one which was a big development in the moving mechanics in these type of games and many other things ,like the special moves during or at the end of the fight and using the environment was also new concepts that was introduced in consoles like playstation and xbox and from there the cutscene cinematics also was introduced and that was great for the storytelling because it was easier to tell the story through motion videos than with words typed or with voice narrative and from there started some of the biggest

sequels that is well known like tekken, street fighter, mortal kombat and also games that is not so popular but also had made a success like virtua fighter, dead or alive and soul caliber.

The future of the genre

If the journey of the fighting games had told us one thing it will be that there is always room for improvement ,with the constant development in character designs we could see a more realistic characters and with the development in the gaming engines we could see a more realistic movements and combos and we can see more realistic dodging and blocking techniques and with the huge love that everyone have for the stories and cinema the cinematics can be developed by the mocap technology ,that will allow the merging between games and cinema which had proved to be very successful

and with the rising of the vr experiences with the fighting games there is a very long road starting right now.
